Offical Pre-Alpha Build of Next UT Released!

Today Epic has released an official pre-alpha build of the next Unreal Tournament. This is not even in alpha state, is buggy, has placeholder textures and models, and is not finished in any way. Epic recommends that people not play it. However, if you don't feel like heeding that warning, you can go ahead and register on the official forums and then visit the official announcement thread, making sure to READ WHAT IT SAYS. That will lead you to the download for the playable game.

REMEMBER this is not a final product. If you play the release, DO NOT expect it to be perfect. Please provide feedback on the UT forums. If you stream or record it, make sure to note that this is a pre-alpha prototype and does not represent the final product. Same with posting screenshots. Almost all of the artwork is not final in this version of the game. Don't sell it as something it is not.

Now that all of that is out of the way, you probably want to play online... right? Well we have you covered there as well. Just come to the BeyondUnreal IRC channel where community member raxxy has graciously provided a number of servers to play the game on. I'm not going to lie, it is already really fun!

Lastly, Epic has let us know if we can hit 300 in our IRC channel that JoeWilcox (aka DrSin) will come answer questions in there. Invite everyone you know so we can have a little Q&A!

See you in game!

Killing Floor 2: Blood, Bullets, and Blades

Tripwire Interactive has been making the rounds with the gaming press, doling out chunks of new info on Killing Floor 2. One of the better previews can be found at PC Gamer.

In addition to more details of the gore system (and it does seem like it will up the ante significantly), they talk a bit about the new perk and melee systems. There will be 25 perk levels, each granting a passive skill (much like the current version), and every fifth level allowing the player to choose a custom perk to give each player a chance to specialize even more.

The most interesting aspect of the greatly expanded melee system is the ability to block. Correctly timing the move can reduce the damage inflicted by the zed, or even stagger it, giving your team a chance to pile on.

Below is the latest in the Meet the Zeds series of Killing Floor 2 trailers.

2K Updates Borderlands, No Gamespy Removal... yet.

2K and Gearbox have released a patch to Borderlands today that is aimed to just let you know how the Gamespy update plans are moving along. The update is only available for Steam users, but never fear, Gearbox is here!

The noted for the update are below, as seen on the 2K support site:

  • Removed SecuRom from the title and all DLC
  • Added a "Granting Tool" In the steam "Tools" section that turns a retail Borderlands disc into a Steam version of Borderlands. Need help with that? Here's our guide.
  • "News Ticker" added to the main menu to give you updates on the Multiplayer restoration updates.
  • Imported SecuRom DLC keys into Steam, so if you bought DLC outside of Steam, activate it within Steam and get your matching content.

Indeed, you read that right. All DRM has been removed from Borderlands and its DLC. You can also activate your retail Borderlands game disc on Steam using the Borderlands Granting Tool in the Tools section of Steam. Additionally, all SecuROM protected DLCs can be activated on Steam using the key provided to unlock the DRM on those products. Pretty awesome stuff!

Unfortunately, this update does not completely remove Gamespy and multiplayer on the game will be broken until they release a Gamespy removing, Steam integrating patch to the game sometime soon.

BU Podcast: Episode Ten Now Available!

This week we talk about the changes that have been made to the game, feedback on the art direction livestream, thoughts on various movement mechanics and more! Please enjoy. I am seriously begging here!
